Attribution Windows Without the Confusion

How cookies, referral codes, program identifiers, cross-device behavior, deduplication, refunds, and evidence affect whether a conversion is attributed.

Attribution Windows Without the Confusion

An attribution window is the period during which a tracked interaction may remain eligible to receive credit for a later conversion. It is not a promise that every purchase inside the window belongs to the first link a customer clicked.

What the window actually controls

A program may use a first-party cookie, referral code, program identifier, checkout metadata, or provider event. The window defines how long that evidence remains eligible. The program still needs a priority rule—first eligible click, last eligible click, coupon priority, direct-return treatment, or another disclosed method.

The Crown Affiliates baseline

The general Crown Affiliates referral parameter can be remembered in a first-party cookie for up to 60 days. Individual programs can publish a different attribution window. The program rule controls the program; the general cookie does not create a commission by itself.

Why attribution can break

  • The visitor deletes or blocks cookies.
  • The click happens on one device and conversion on another.
  • A privacy browser shortens storage duration.
  • A direct visit, another Affiliate, or an approved code receives priority under the program rule.
  • The conversion is duplicated, refunded, cancelled, fraudulent, or otherwise ineligible.
  • The provider event arrives late or without the required identifier.

Separate observation from economic truth

A click means the platform observed a request. A conversion event means a provider or application reported an outcome. A pending commission means the outcome is still under review. An available commission means current release conditions were met. Those are different states, and good dashboards should not collapse them into one number.

Write the dispute rule before launch

Brands should document which evidence wins when identifiers conflict, how duplicate events are handled, whether self-referrals are permitted, how returns affect commission, and what information an Affiliate should provide when requesting review. Affiliates should retain the program version, link, content, date, and campaign records connected to meaningful traffic.

Clear attribution is not just analytics. It is the trust layer between the Brand’s expense and the Affiliate’s work.
